USD/JPY Strategy: Narrowing Rate Differential Between Two Central Banks Causes Temporary Weakness in USD/JPY

Fundamental Analysis

Recent Japanese economic data indicates rising inflation alongside a gradual economic recovery. This supports the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) continuation of tightening measures. Additionally, comments from the BOJ Governor have increased market expectations of a potential rate hike during the December meeting, keeping the yen strong.

On the other hand, while US economic data has recently shown improvement and political developments could reignite inflation, these factors are unlikely to alter the Federal Reserve’s short-term monetary policy direction. Moreover, with Federal Reserve officials expressing support for a rate cut in December, market anticipation for such a move has grown. Consequently, the narrowing interest rate differential between the BOJ and the Federal Reserve suggests continued downward pressure on USD/JPY.

Technical Analysis

On the hourly chart, USD/JPY faced resistance and resumed its downward trend, setting new recent lows, which indicates a weak pattern. If the pair fails to overcome resistance, the downtrend is likely to persist. It is suggested to open a light short position at the resistance level of 150.20, targeting 148.80 with a stop-loss at 150.80.

Trading Recommendation

Entry: Short at 150.20 (light position)

Target: 148.80 Stop-loss: 150.80

Support Level: 148.80 Resistance Level: 150.20
